PROJECT   TESTING  AREAS

Three testing sites or areas were selected under consultancy with russian colleagues. Its selection was based on the results of the first year of project. Under our technology neeeds and practice these ones were selected as representants of all three forest cathegories, which are exists in our country i.e. our forest classesas Protection forests, Special purpouse forests andCommercial forests. These ones are selected as the typical for Kamchatka and relatively accessible for testing.

Protection forest or Special purpose forest - test site 1 - Esso village - Kozyrevskiy range

More important test site from the point ofview ofnature protection. There are forest stands with alder(Alnus) and cembra pine (Pinus pumila) superiority. Followly there are birch (Betula ermani), larch, poplars etc. This locality is situated near Esso village by north margine of Kozyrevskiy chrebet range.Follow materials were imported (1996): forest stand maps, extract from forest inventory book etc. We expect that aerial photo processing will be possible.

Test site is situated in the valley of river Kamchatka, around the same name hill. This one is very impacted by forest fires and there are a several fragments oflarch (Larix kuriliensis) stands with some spruces. As the renewated stand on the forest fires area thebirch (Betula platyphylla) stands can be investigated. This test site is the typical area of commercial forests in Kamtchatka, which covered 6% of forests in total only. Follow materials were imported (1996): forest stand maps, forest inventory book copy etc. The aerial photos and satellite imagery will be bought or imported at next phase of project.

Protection forest - test site 3 - Kronockij zapovednik - Kronocky natural preserve

This test site covers the most important phenomena of nature of Kamchatka.Selected area is situated at NE direction from Kronockiy lake. There are the eastest place of larch stands in Kamchatka. This one is very difficult for transport of people, but very marvellous landscape. We expect, that namely this site maybe very attractive for foreign experts, scientists etc. In 1996 follow materials were imported: forest stand maps, forest inventory book extract and aerial photos. All materials had been processed since the end of 1996 year.

In this year (1997) four FMI experts have spent 2 weeks in Kamchatka by office works - new instalations of „TOPOL“, digital work presentation, new work treaty creation etc. The field work in Kronockiy zapovednik was the limelight of project works in 1997. We have spent 3 weeks inwilderness of Kamchatka taiga and tundra, volcanoes, geysers, ash and lava fields, glaciers. We have recognized Kamchatka marvellous nature and necessity of its protection. During 3 weeks of our wild trip have we walked 250 km between mosquitoes and bears, climbed on Kronockiy volcano (3500 m high) and measured our point of interest on GPS system. We have good measured material to trying area transformation in „TOPOL“ software.
