II. STAGE

IV. MISSION TO MOROCCO ( 6 March - 7 May 1999)

 

Plan:

Presentation and discussion of the proposed principles of game management in Moroccan conditions

Presentation and discussion of preliminary outputs of the game-management GIS in Tarmilate with officials of the Moroccan Ministry of Water and Forests (with the Ambassador of the Czech Republic attending)

Discussion of the principles of game management and prospects of the Project after the year 2000

Supplementing the demonstration facility with additional equipment

Checking possibilities of supplementing the breeding stock with selected herd of the Barbary Sheep from the Preserve near Marrakech

Seven-day working visit of two officials of the Moroccan Ministry of Water and Forests to the Czech Republic

Realization

 

The long-term vision of using the acclimatization game preserve rests in:

- saving a rare animal species
- strengthening its good autochthonous population based on special breeding principles (ecotechnics and genetics)

The Project shows that game management means primarily the active protection of the natural heritage by means of controlled regulation of animal populations.

 

Aims of Barbary Sheep breeding in the Tarmilate acclimatization game preserve:

Re-introduction of the Barbary sheep to the Oulmes highlands
Acclimatization of the animals introduced there
Checking the animals´health ( quarantine)
Creation of territorial links of the animals to the environment
Creation of social links within the population
Carrying out breeding ( selection) interventions
Population control
Creation of resources for the further expansion of the Barbary sheep in the area
Gaining basic knowledge about the Barbary sheep

Discussion of the game-management principles proposed and realized as part of the Project

Discussion of possible future activities after the termination of the Project in the year 2000

Decision on preparing a preliminary study of building a larger game preserve (a step towards the development of activities after the termination of the existing Project)

Aim of study:

basis for obtaining financial resources for a transition project

 

 

After the completion of the 4th mission to Morocco:

Seven-day working visit to the Czech Republic by two officials  of the moroccan Ministry of Water and Forests

Participants:

Mr. El Kabiri, General Inspector of the moroccan Ministry of Water and Forests

Mr. Haffane, head of Game-management, Fisheries and Nature Protection Section

Aim:

Presenting the basic elements of game management in the Czech Republic as an example of a developed game-management system

Time:

The working visit took place from 29 May to 5 June 1999 and was appreciated to be a contribution

 

Content:

Game management, animal breeding, game-keeping facilities and equipment, game-management economy and instruction, history and tradition of game-keeping in the Czech Republic

Catching animals in the Tarmilate game preserve and measuring the morphological characteristics of the animals

Catching , transport and placing of selected head of Barbary Sheep from Marrakech in the Tarmilate game preserve, marking and admission measuring
